the afterlife of waste impact hub
SYNOPSIS
A feature documentary that investigates the hidden environmental and social costs of the global fast-fashion industry through the lens of Kenya's second-hand clothing economy.
Every year, thousands of tonnes of used clothing arrive in Kenya from around the world. While some garments find a second life in markets such as Gikomba, large quantities are damaged, unsellable, or quickly discarded. These textiles often end up in dumpsites, rivers, and informal landfills, creating significant environmental challenges for communities already struggling with waste management.
The film follows two women who are creating solutions. Fashion stylist Luca transforms discarded garments into bold new designs, while environmental activist Janet Chemitei empowers women and youth through textile upcycling initiatives. Together, they demonstrate how creativity, innovation, and community action can turn waste into opportunity.
